Last day in Bonavista

Today was a pretty quiet day overall.  We woke up in our beautiful campsite and met up with the caravan group in the nearby town of Elliston.  We visited a small but well done museum about the seal hunting that has a long history here.  Steve found a seal-fur bow tie that he wanted (????) but was told by the manager of the gift shop that it can not be brought over the border into the U.S.  Thankfully we had to leave it there!

After a couple of quick gift shop stops, we went to an area where you can see Atlantic Puffins up close.  We were told it was rocky and uneven ground, so we wore hiking boots and brought our trekking poles.  Unfortunately, the puffins were on the opposite side of a huge rock outcropping, and you had to climb that thing in order to see them.  I looked at it for quite a while and decided that the puffins I’ve seen at Haystack Rock from the safety of the beach would have to suffice.  Steve didn’t even think about it.  It was a no for him, too.  Most of our group did it though.

The picture makes it look easy!

We decided to skip the museum visits for the afternoon and went out for lunch instead.  Several caravaners showed up, too.  That’s one of the fun things about this kind of tour.  Usually we run into each other as we are out and about by ourselves.

After lunch we headed back to the rv and prepared for a little happy hour we hosted.  It was nice to just sit outside and enjoy the view.  Ken and Deb brought the fixings for duck-farts and we shared that favorite drink from our Alaska trip with new friends.

Unfortunately one of our group drove over a rock on their way here and put a hole in their oil pan.  They spent the afternoon sitting on the gravel road waiting for a tow truck.

After everyone left, we packed up our stuff and started to prepare for departure tomorrow.  We will be heading to our most northerly destination on this trip… Twillingate.
