Moose!

We saw one today… a bull moose with antlers… on our drive from Bonavista to Twillingate!  This was AFTER we had passed a semi-truck that had hit one!  The whole front of the semi’s grill was smashed in and parts were hanging off the front.  The moose was nowhere to be seen, but there was plenty of blood on the highway.  I’m guessing it was down in the ditch or had been dragged off of the road.  I did see an ambulance shortly before we got to the truck.  We don’t know if the driver was in it, but there was no one with the truck when we went by.  We were VERY happy that the moose we saw was staying off of the road.  It’s a bucket-list animal to see, but you sure don’t want to hit one!

Since we were boondocking last night, there was no unhooking of utilities or the usual stuff that takes a bit of time when we leave a campground.  We were able to safely leave our cliffside spot without going over the edge in the process.  We scooted early so had time to get some breakfast in town before starting our day of driving.  It was a longish one… just over 4 hours.  The distance wasn’t terribly far, but the speed limit through the numerous towns we drove through dropped to 30 mph.  It made for a long day.

Our campsite tonight has a view of the water in the distance, and we were fortunate enough to get one of the sites with full hookups… water, electricity, and sewer.  It’s in the 80s here today, with humidity, so having AC is appreciated.  Many of the RVs didn’t get sewer, and the RV next to us keeps blowing a fuse while trying to use their AC.  The larger rigs (yep, we call ‘em rigs) also use 50 amps for electricity,  and this park, like most in this part of Canada, only have 30 amps.  For those of you non-RVers, the more amps, the more stuff you can run in your R.V.  Bigger ones typically have 2 AC units and 30 amps isn’t enough to run all that.  Fortunately, our small motorhome uses 30 amps so all our stuff works.

We had a ‘social’ tonight and a trip log meeting.  My plan was to bring a Newfoundland dish for the social… French fries covered in stuffing and gravy.  I just couldn’t figure out how to keep it all hot while sitting on a table outside… cold gravy just didn’t sound appetizing.  I opted for crackers and dip instead.

Our trip log meetings are to inform us of upcoming travel days and what to expect along the way.  Last summer while in Alaska, we did them the night before we traveled so that we knew what was coming the next day.  This year, our wagon masters do the meetings during socials we have the day we arrive at a new location.  So, tonight’s debrief was for a drive we won’t do for another 4 days… and because it will be just one night at our next destination, they also did the trip log for the drive after that one!  Needless to say, it will be almost a week before we do this last drive.  Now, we got tired at times of all the trip meetings we did while in Alaska, but doing them so far in advance isn’t super helpful either.  It also doesn’t help that our wagon masters don’t have Starlink for internet.  WiFi is very poor or nonexistent way up here, and they haven’t been able to make calls or research information for us.  Steve and I are pretty resourceful (and have reliable internet) but there are folks here who are in the same boat as our wagon masters.  They can’t look stuff up and can’t call or text the wagon masters for clarification.  One of our friends was laughing so hard during the meeting at the ridiculousness, that when the wagon master asked if she was ok… she was crying… she said it was allergies.  That made all of us laugh even harder!

Did I mention we are in an area called Iceberg Alley?  In the late spring/early summer, icebergs travel down the Labrador current past this area.  It’s a little late to be seeing them now, but there are a few still out there… somewhere.  There is a website, icebergfinder.com that tells you where they have been spotted.  I thought we were as far north as we are going to get, but turns out we aren’t done yet.  We are headed to St. Anthony and that is quite a bit farther north than we are here.  There have been some icebergs still floating by up there.  I’m as excited to see those as I was the moose!

Sorry no pics today… I’ll do better tomorrow!
